Had a great shoot with Jonathan Ackley today. Look for his entire set (including a fresh hot take on Superman) in a future issue of MANofAUSTIN.com
ISSUENO4 is a collection of the bigger muscled physiques I’ve had the pleasure of capturing. From my very first not-so-professional session with a bodybuilder to my most recent so, I guess you can say this issue has been 4 years in the making.
This edition is the biggest yet with more than 5 layouts from my portfolio plus 2 from fellow Texas artists David Lewis of Houston and Awesome Images Photography from Dallas.

This issue also features a cool set from Houston photographer David Lewis and FIVE QUESTIONS W/// Austin’s visually insane photographer John Paul Wilson.

Our first issue devoted to Texas Male Photography is online and we hope you enjoy this revamped web version of our former print publication.
This month we’re proud to feature Houston’s Trevor Adams. This former Instinct cover model fills you in on his decision to slow down his modeling career.
Remember, we’re always taking submissions for future issues. Texas-based models/photographers make it into the magazine and non-Texas work is featured online here at MANofAUSTIN.com.

Monday’s MANofAUSTIN is also our mini-mag Feb-March Coverguy – Alex. This session was photographed for a calendar submission last year while Alex was a senior and football player for a Texas university.
It is tough to grasp how built his body really is in these shots – yeah, he’s incredibly sculpted but when you see him in person he seems even bigger than life. He has a beautiful skin tone and one of the best torsos we’ve photographed. Plus, we couldn’t get over those massive (and hairy) football legs and backside of his that barely fit inside the pair of Unicos we bought for the shoot. But our favorite asset of Alex, besides his easy going personality, is his pair of intense green eyes. During this session, he was still pretty new so we had to keep reminding him to ease up on his “look” into the lens.
Since then, Alex has graduated and moved to New York City to pursue more modeling. He has done quite a bit of work and recently we caught him in a new underwear campaign.

You’ve seen our Jan-Feb coverguy Andrew in print, now see him in action. We took a few clips while the camera clicked away during this coverguy shoot.
We met Colin online through a modeling website early this summer. We weren’t sure if we were a good fit but he assured us his body was in top shape so we scheduled a test shoot. He was right – his body was incredible and the red hair was a new one for us. He pulled out a tee with LOVE NOT HATE printed on it. “My friend designed this and thought it would be a good shot,” he told us. Again, he was right. We fell in love with the shirt, and Colin. The shirt inspired us to devote the entire issue to the theme LOVE NOT HATE and give Colin the cover spot. What started as a test shoot resulted in this month’s Cover Guy layout.
What’s your favorite thing about Austin?
- I think the thing that really made me fall in love with Austin is just all the dualities that exists here. It’s this great, thriving city that if you’re here for more than a few hours starts to feel more like a wonderfully open little community than any other city I’ve lived in or visited before. There’s a lake with parks almost directly in the middle of downtown! That’s not how it’s supposed to be, right? And even though it’s one of the best places for business currently in the country, it’s also an artistic hotspot. I love that. I love living in a place where such a variety of people and opportunities coexist, where I may not know their name but quite possibly recognize their face when I pass them on the street or at a concert. It’s kind of amazing really.
What do you like about modeling?
- I really grew up in the theatre. As a kid and teenager (and now probably if I’m telling all my secrets) I was just the antithesis of cool, awkward looking and shy, nerdy about all the “wrong” things. And you know at that age people are brutal. They let you know on a daily basis just how different you are so I sort of latched onto the idea of theatre and pretending to be these other people pretty quickly. With the help of someone else’s words and a little costume and makeup magic I got to explore and present parts of myself that I could’t put a voice to on a daily basis. Modeling is sort of the same. I mean, I wake up every morning knowing, or thinking I know, who I am and embracing that, but then some days I get to go and meet with a photographer and together we decide, “No, I ‘m not that today. I’m not sweatpants, freckles and glasses Colin. Today I’m fierce, fit, and…I don’t know, sassy Colin,” at least for this moment, for this shot, and that’s a lot of fun for me. Then 3 weeks or 3 months or however long later when I’m sitting there back in my sweats and glasses, freckles on full display and I get to see the final product I remember, “Oh yea! I have that inside.” And then, again like theatre when an important and politically or socially relative piece comes along where you get to more publicly put your voice or image to something that matters not only to you personally but to a whole community of people…that’s pretty fucking cool.
The LOVE NOT HATE shirt was designed by Taylor Thomas and her designs can be found on www.livetoloveapparel.com
