From the Editor: My Moment with Rue
Rue McClanahan – Another Golden Girl has gone to that big lanai in the sky. The photo above is from her 2007 visit to Book People here in Austin. She was on a book tour for her autobiography “My First Five Husbands”. I was lucky enough to have her take my question during her Q&A “Which chapter did you find the most difficult to write?” I asked her. She gave a thoughtful look and replied, “That’s a good question. No one has... Read More

Just a few of the questions you may have on your mind… How do I model for MoA? Please send a current photo and age with your email. Nudity is not required but shirtless to underwear/swimwear is at least preferred. You must be over 18 to model for ManofAustin.com. Men living in Austin are preferred but we are open to any man who personifies the “Austin” way of life – smart, sexy and social. You do not have to be gay but you must be comfortable... Read More
This is just weird – Wal-Mart sells caskets?
I had to see it with my own eyes. A co-worker told me today you could buy coffins at walmart.com so of course I logged on and whadya know? Wal-Mart sells caskets! These beauties come in bronze, steel and stainless steel and you can’t pick one up in cousin Johnny’s truck or Aunt Julie’s van – you’ll have to order online. I’m guessing they send it directly to the funeral home. No telling what the shipping is but prices range from $995 to... Read More
Golden Girls’ “Blanche” Suffers Stroke
McClanahan, best known as the aging but saucy southern belle Blanche Devereaux, spent two weeks in the ICU and is now undergoing physical rehabilitation. We just lost Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty in 2010. Golden Girl co-star, Betty White, is scheduled to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Screen Actors Guild awards on January 23. We had a chance to meet Rue and enjoy an excerpt from her autobiography during her stop at BookPeople in Austin. Our prayers are with Rue. Check... Read More
Katherine McPhee Says Idol’s Closet Should Stay Shut, We Say Shutup and Start Season 9!
Simon says he’s leaving (we smell an Idol rebirth named X-Factor on the way) and now Taylor Hick’s No 2. Katherine McPhee is telling Season 9 contestants to stay in the closet – at least while belting out a tune each week. Well Ms. McPhee – we have to agree with you. Sadly, America isn’t ready to give us the right to marry and they just aren’t ready to crown a queen as the next American Idol. McPhee tells New England mag NightTimez…. “You... Read More
Glee’s Kurt – My New Hero!
I just finished watching the 4th episode of Glee – FOX’s newest attempt at quirky TV – and in a word it was “amazing”. I laughed, I cried, I went back to my teenage years. Growing up in West Texas was tough for a gay kid like myself. I butched it up as much as I could which kept me out of the hands of bullies but other guys I knew in school weren’t so lucky. Some got tossed around in the hallways or punched while walking to the lunchroom.... Read More
The Black Gay Button Kanye Keeps Pushing
Yes, ‘Taylor-gate’ is still making watercoolers buzz. Personally, I’m with Wendy Williams who said enough with being upset over it, if America really hates what Kanye West did on Sunday’s MTV VMA’s then show him where it hurts – in his music sales. When stuff like this happens I’m a blogaholic. I google current events and read as many blogs as I can to get different perspectives. The comments also give me great insight into what people... Congrats to Austin’s Gayest Greatest Softball Team
Last year a friend told me he was helping start a new softball team up. Since he was a college ball player he was naturally excited about forming this new group of guys – I thought it was just another batch of Sunday afternoon beer drinkers. I was wrong – It was the Shady Ladies. This group of “pretty boys” went up to bat and within weeks of their first season had other teams taking notice and changing strategies. They weren’t just gay-tuned faces... Read More
Another One Almost Bites the Recession Dust
In a world of electronic-based adult entertainment (Internet porn) and a weak economy it’s no surprise that two popular gay mags are pulling back on their issue numbers. Freshman and MEN Magazine will go from monthly publication to quarterly (every 3 months) and will stop mailed subscriptions – new issues will only be available in stores. According to gay.fleshbot.com, anyone who currently has a subscription to either magazine will now receive Unzipped in your postbox. It’s... Read More
LOL: Life with a Cat
I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned it but I live with a cat. That’s huge for me for 2 reasons: 1) I’m allergic (thank God for Zyrtec) and 2) I’ve never really been a big fan of cats. But when my boyfriend and I moved in together I became a stepdad to his little furry critter named Sophia (yes, for Sophia Patrillo of The Golden Girls). I’ve realized that I’m lucky; Sophia is a sweet kitty. Don found her next a dumpster when she was... Read More
