I just finished watching the 4th episode of Glee – FOX’s newest attempt at quirky TV – and in a word it was “amazing”. I laughed, I cried, I went back to my teenage years.
Growing up in West Texas was tough for a gay kid like myself. I butched it up as much as I could which kept me out of the hands of bullies but other guys I knew in school weren’t so lucky. Some got tossed around in the hallways or punched while walking to the lunchroom. It was never easy to watch but in the 1980’s not many of us had the courage to speak up… unlike Glee’s fashionista student and gay newbie – Kurt.
I won’t give the story away in case you haven’t seen the hilarious, disturbing and touching fourth episode but I’ll just say that Kurt is my new hero and the kind of kid I wish I could have been all those years ago. Here’s a hint though: Last week he came out to a girl who was crushing on him and tonight he faced his macho, football-loving father.
You can watch Kurt’s “kick ass” episode of Glee on Hulu.com in the coming days but for now enjoy these great previews.
