Gay Marriages on 2010 Census Record

gay_marriage_cake_300.jpgThe U.S. Census Bureau, reversing an earlier decision of the Bush administration, has announced that married same-sex couples will be counted as such in the 2010 decennial count. Previously, same-sex couples only had the option of checking off “unmarried partner,” which will remain an option. Same-sex couples could not be married in the United States during the last decennial count. But last year, after two states had approved same-sex marriages, the bureau said those legal marriages would go uncounted because the federal Defense of Marriage Act prevented the government from recognizing them. The Obama administration recently announced that its interpretation of the act did not prohibit the gathering of the information.
